About the founder: Tsholo Khalema

As a Canadian trained artist and having been an immigrant child in my early days, I had many difficulties adapting and integrating as well as maintaining my South African ethnic identity while fitting into the Canadian norm, my loss of identity lead to difficulties, alienation and disengagement and without the support I had from my family and theatre classes it would have had long-term effect on my education, social and other aspects of my life. Theatre became a way for me to express and tell my stories in a safe environment.

As an immigrant child myself, I’m well aware that most immigrant children have difficulties integrating into mainstream society and most Canadian born children have a difficult time understanding and perhaps relating to new Canadian. It could be a barrier in language, culture, or even religion. Under the COLOURSPILL projects, I will be offering workshops to both immigrant and Canadian youth focusing on identity, self confidence and cross cultural communications. Through theatre, clowning poetry and movement I can identify patterns of immigrant youth and Canadian youth. In a safe environment they can then have an understanding and can identify and learn about each others different cultures and ethnicities. I would be facilitating several workshops dealing with clowning, theatre, poetry, African music and sketch comedy. I am please to be part of these projects which allows immigrant children and Canadian youth to eradicate racism and discriminatory practices that can undermine the development of a strong identity.
